Residential Furniture & Architectural Woodwork Restoration

Olek Inc. restores antique, vintage and contemporary furniture, family heirlooms, built-ins and architectural woodwork with an emphasis on sound structure, material integrity and finish continuity. From failed joinery and missing veneer to worn finishes and damaged millwork, each treatment is developed around the original piece rather than a one-size-fits-all refinishing formula.

Restore the Piece Without Erasing What Makes It Original

Family heirlooms, fine antiques, vintage and designer furniture, and high-quality architectural woodwork often deserve more than a cosmetic touch-up. Olek evaluates structure, materials, finish, prior repairs, history and intended use so sound original fabric can be retained while damaged or missing areas are carefully restored.

Furniture Structure & Failed Joinery

Use a verified Olek project here to show the condition, treatment and what original material was retained. The strongest proof is a repair that demonstrates why proper joinery restoration is different from simply adding adhesive to a loose joint.

Decorative Surface Restoration

A real before-and-after should demonstrate species, grain, figure, pattern and color integration rather than merely showing a newly refinished surface. Replacement material should visually belong to the surrounding original work.

Finish Matching & Surface Recovery

The most convincing finish restoration preserves the character that should remain while correcting damage that distracts from the piece. Verified project photography should show color, sheen and surface continuity at close range.

Architectural Woodwork Restoration

Built-ins, mantels, paneling, moldings and stair-related woodwork often require a combination of site judgment and shop craft. The case-study slot should show how the repair integrates with the surrounding room rather than appearing newly inserted.

Preserve. Repair. Integrate.

A Restoration Philosophy Built Around the Original Piece

Structure Before Cosmetics

A beautiful finish cannot compensate for weak joinery. Structural issues are identified first so the finished piece is stable, usable and appropriately repaired.

Retain Sound Original Material

Where preservation matters, serviceable original wood, veneer, carving, hardware and finish are retained whenever the approved treatment allows.

Make the Repair Belong

Species, grain, profile, surface texture, color and sheen are considered so repaired areas integrate with the existing piece instead of reading as obvious patches.

Antique, vintage & contemporary furniture

01

Antique, Vintage & Contemporary Furniture Restoration

Tables, chairs, desks, cabinets, case pieces and mixed-material furniture can be stabilized, repaired and visually restored according to the piece’s construction, age and design intent. Collectible or designer-specific objects that need deeper conservation treatment can connect with Olek’s specialty furniture restoration and conservation expertise . If the primary scope is fabric, leather or cushioning, see residential reupholstery .

Mortise & tenon, dowels, splits & structural failures

02

Structural Joinery & Furniture Repair

Loose mortise-and-tenon joints, failed dowels, broken members, split wood and other structural failures are repaired with methods appropriate to the original construction. When a prior repair has compromised the piece, the assembly can be evaluated for a more durable corrective approach rather than simply immobilized with more adhesive.

Veneer, inlay, marquetry & decorative surfaces

03

Veneer, Inlay & Marquetry Restoration

Lifted, missing or damaged veneer, decorative inlays and marquetry can be repaired or recreated with attention to species, cut, figure, pattern and surrounding color. The objective is visual continuity while retaining sound original material wherever the treatment allows.

Color, sheen, patina & surface restoration

04

Finish Matching, Refinishing & Surface Restoration

Scratches, chips, discoloration, worn surfaces and finish failure can be addressed through localized treatment, finish matching or full refinishing when appropriate. Color, sheen, texture, transparency and patina are evaluated against the original surface and the owner’s desired outcome.

Built-ins, paneling, mantels, moldings & stair work

05

Architectural Woodwork & Built-In Restoration

Built-in bookcases, wall paneling, wainscot, mantels, moldings, doors and stair-related woodwork can be repaired, matched and refinished as part of a residential interior. Work may combine site assessment, selective removal, shop restoration and reinstallation. New replacement components, when required, can be coordinated through Olek’s residential fabrication capabilities .

Carving, missing components & ornamental details

06

Carving, Missing Parts & Decorative Detail Restoration

Missing carved elements, turned components, decorative moldings, furniture parts and ornamental wood details can be repaired, recreated or matched when the surrounding design provides a reliable reference. Hand carving, profile replication and material/finish matching allow replacement work to integrate with the original piece.

Why Olek

Furniture Knowledge, Woodworking & Finishing Under One Roof

Olek’s roots are in furniture conservation, restoration and reupholstery. Today cabinetmakers, finishers, carvers, upholsterers, metalworkers and other specialists work within one shop so complex residential pieces can be evaluated as complete objects rather than passed between unrelated vendors.

Good Furniture Repair Is More Than Adding Glue

Many failed furniture repairs come from treating the symptom instead of the joint or material that failed. Olek’s approach starts by understanding original construction and the cause of failure , then defining a corrective treatment that respects the piece. Improvements to a recurring weakness or prior repair are discussed with the owner before intervention.

Material, Detail & Finish Judgment

Restoration Techniques Chosen for the Piece

Traditional Joinery & Wood Repair

Mortise-and-tenon, doweled and other furniture joints are evaluated according to how they were designed to carry load. Wood-to-wood repairs, fitted components and Dutchman inlays can be used where appropriate rather than relying on cosmetic filler.

Veneer, Marquetry & Carved Detail

Decorative surfaces require both material knowledge and visual judgment. Species, cut, figure, grain direction, pattern, carving character and surrounding color all influence whether a repair belongs.

Finish Matching & Patina

Not every old surface should be stripped. Depending on significance and condition, treatment may involve localized touch-up, finish recovery, color and sheen matching, or deliberate full refinishing.

Residential Furniture & Woodwork Restoration FAQs

What types of residential furniture does Olek restore?

Olek restores antique, vintage, modern and contemporary furniture including tables, chairs, desks, cabinets, case pieces and mixed-material furniture. The appropriate treatment depends on construction, condition, materials, prior repairs and the owner’s goals.

Can Olek match the original color, sheen and finish?

Yes, when the existing surface and materials allow it. Finish matching considers color, sheen, transparency, texture, age and surrounding surfaces. Depending on condition, the best treatment may be localized touch-up, finish restoration or full refinishing.

Can you repair damaged veneer, inlay or marquetry?

Yes. Olek can repair lifted or damaged veneer and recreate missing inlay or marquetry where suitable materials and references are available. Matching grain, species, figure, pattern and color is part of the treatment.

Do you restore built-ins, mantels, stair parts and architectural woodwork?

Yes. Residential restoration can include built-in cabinetry, paneling, wainscot, mantels, moldings, doors and stair-related woodwork. Depending on the element, work may be performed on site, in the shop, or through a combination of removal, shop restoration and reinstallation.

Should an antique or heirloom always be completely refinished?

No. Full refinishing is only one possible treatment. Where original surface, patina, age or authorship matters, a more conservative approach may better preserve the character and material that give the piece significance. Olek discusses the desired outcome before treatment.

How long does residential furniture restoration take?

There is no useful one-size-fits-all timeline. A localized repair and a complex marquetry, structural or architectural restoration require very different work. Olek establishes a project-specific schedule after reviewing condition, scope, material needs, approvals and logistics.

Is restoration done in Olek’s shop or on site?

Both are possible. Removable furniture is generally handled in Olek’s New Jersey facility, while built-ins and architectural woodwork may require site assessment, removal, installation or selected on-site restoration. The treatment location is determined by the object and scope.

What should I send for an initial restoration review?

Send overall and close-up photos, approximate dimensions, project location, a description of the damage, any known maker or history, any known previous repairs or refinishing, and what you hope to preserve or change. Photos of loose joints, missing veneer, finish damage, labels or signatures are especially useful.
